William Tay: I may not be a top student, but I will achieve my dream.
William was born with a hearing disability, but he has never let it affect him in pursuing his dreams. He graduated from ITE, and chose to study at Singapore Polytechnic (Diploma in Infocomm Security Management, DISM), as he felt that this was the best way for him to achieve his dream.

What you need to know about Diploma in Infocomm Security Managemet (DISM, S54)
Diploma Course
Studying for an IT security-related diploma is a significant investment of your time, money and resources. It is better to understand the value that you would be able to generate with the course. The information provided here is to help all students to make the correct decision.
Key Points about DISM
Below are the three key points about DISM course.
1. Broad-based Curriculum
The Curriculum plays a major role in the learning process. DISM focuses on three main skill sets: Offensive, Defensive and Investigative.
The first year include the general curriculum where students establish the fundamentals of information technology that includes computer architecture and operating system, networking fundamentals, linux administration, etc. The second year has more security related modules such as Ethical Hacking and Defences, Applied Cryptography, Computer Forensics, Programming using Perl and C, etc. Third year is the most crucial year when you put all the skills and knowledge together to do your final year project plus some modules. You also choose your specialisation: either in Security Incident Management or Forensics and Investigation.
2. Lots of Stress
It can be quite stressful during term time as students are required to go through the curriculum and meeting all the assessment requirements of modules.
3. Lots of Programming Assignments
The misconception students have is that they assume that the course has minimal programming requirements. In actual fact, programming knowledge and skills are very important in this course. As such, students need to prepare themselves and have the correct expectations before they begin to feel the pressure of the requirements from the modules' assignments, especially to those who did not like programming modules..
So, which course?
Consider your interest, your academic strengths, your desired career, and the diploma course that would help you reach your aims and career goals.

Polys step up cyber security courses to keep up with growing demand: straitstimes.com
More than 30,000 students took the O-level examinations last year and will be receiving their results on Monday. This is the first of a five-part daily series on the results and the developments in the educational institutions that students can join after the examinations. New IT security diploma courses offered, old ones revamped.
On the back of a recent spate of cyber security breaches around the world - including the hacking of Hollywood studio Sony Pictures' systems - organisations from government agencies to financial institutions have been looking to beef up their information technology (IT) security against malicious attacks. And polytechnics in Singapore are leading the charge in grooming IT security professionals, offering new cyber security diploma courses and revamping old ones.
..........
Cyber security courses have been available at the remaining polytechnics - from as early as 2006 for Singapore Polytechnic (SP) and TP, and from 2009 for Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP).
.........
SP setup a Cyber Wargame Centre two years ago to provide students with realistic environment to handle various scenarios, such as securing networks and investigating cyber crimes. NYP and TP have also adopted similar training facilities this year to bring realism to their courses.
Mr Liew Chin Chuan, course chair for SP's infocomm security management programme, said, "Technology is always evolving and organisations need people who are well-versed in various security issues. These students have to keep up with the changes."
