Background
Masqueraded code is represented in a form that does not resemble a piece of code. The original data could be code, plaintext, etc. This presents a feeling of uncertainty over the content and intent of the data. Website administrators, in particular, would be greatly concerned about the data that users are sending to their servers, especially due to the proliferation of SQL-injection attacks.

Web-based attacks are being more rampant with the increasing popularity of the internet. The types of attacks are being more sophisticated as well. There is no simple way to secure web applications or ensure the legitimacy of user input. Among these attacks, masqueraded code is the most common technique that attackers would use to bypass security controls. Hence, detecting and uncovering masqueraded code is paramount in enhancing the security of web applications.
 
Description
The objective of this project is to develop an algorithm that can be used to detect masqueraded code and de-masquerade it. A proof-of-concept will be developed consisting of the algorithm to showcase the functionality of what the algorithm can achieve.

Potential Opportunities
The de-masquerading algorithm can be applied in commercial applications (e.g. website back-end databases) to enhance the identification of possible web-attacks.

About NUS Preparatory Programme
The NUS Information Security Specialisation Preparatory Programme is open to students pursuing a diploma in information security related studies at local Polytechnics and who meet the admission requirements of this preparatory programme.

This programme aims at nurturing talented students with firm computing foundations and competent IT skills so as to contribute to the development and management of infocomm security.

Admission Requirements
Students will be admitted to the preparatory programme at the end of their first year in polytechnic study. The admission criteria are as follows:
  • A student has attained an aggregate point of not more than 10 in his GCE 'O' level, scoring at least A2 grade for both his Elementary Mathematics and Additional Mathematics subjects.
  • A student must enrol in an infocomm security diploma and must have attained a GPA of at least 3.7 for the first year of his study in polytechnic.

Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) in DISM Course

"Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) is a term for software and products services combining security information management (SIM) and security event manager (SEM). SIEM technology provides real-time analysis of security alerts generated by network hardware and applications."

At SP's Cyber Wargame Centre (CWC), students will be able to learn about SIEM technology in our Cyberwatch Competency Centre(CCC). These include the basics of correlation of events, real-time monitoring and presentation of information from network and security devices using SIEM technology. Students will understand the key characteristics of log auditing, event management, and how to handle the situation as the incident responders to contain the incident and plan for the recovery steps.

In the corporate world, many have built Security Operations Centres (SOCs) to implement technology such as firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, anti-virus technologies, etc. However, this is not enough. In order to further secure the network it requires SIEM technology to correlate events and centralize the security monitoring, analysis and thus providing effective incident response.

SP has been working closely with our technology partner, e-Cop, in the SIEM area. In our CCC (which essentially is our SOC with SIEM technology) we have the capability and flexibility to generate different types of attack traffic patterns on the network, allowing students to have realistic scenarios. In turn, students will be able to have hands-on practical sessions to analyse and respond to the incidents. Follow-up action including securing the network perimeter devices and servers can then be carried-out. We do not perform "paper exercise" as we wants our students to understand, learn and appreciate what is "incident response" in the real world.

To illustrate the design flexibility in our CCC, we can create a scenario that simulate the Distributed Denial of Service Attack (DDoS), and teach our students how to response to such incident in our CCC. However, you can't "SIMULATE" such attack on the "live" network (it will never be allowed) and then expect students to learn monitoring and perform incident response on the "live" network. Perhaps it is possible through "paper exercise".

Therefore, it is important to understand that the SIEM technology plays a crucial role in the corporate's SOC. DISM students has the opportunity to learn about SIEM technology in our state-of-the-art facility and we hope to give students market-relevant experience to groom them to be the next generation of IT security thought leaders.

Empowering companies in their cyber security defence - KPMG

14 Jan 2014. The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, KPMG in Singapore and Singapore Polytechnic collaborate to help companies here strengthen cyber defence.

Set up by KPMG in Singapore with the support of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and Singapore Polytechnic (SP), the key focus of the KPMG Cyber Security Centre (CSC) launched today lies in empowering companies with the means to take charge of their own cyber defence.


The learning process that KPMG envisions will not only involve formal lessons, but also provide participants an opportunity to test their skills through cyber war gaming exercises. These will take place at the Singapore Polytechnic's (SP) Cyber Wargame Centre, with whom KPMG has recently concluded another agreement for this training.

Training boost for cyber security - The Straits Times

16 Jan 2014. The push to train more specialists in cyber security here to tackle the growing menace of online attacks has received a major boost.

Two new training schemes are about the get underway, backed by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).

The Cyber Security Centre set up by professional services firm KPMG will run a six-month course annually for about 10 to 15 participants. The first course is expected to start after March and will be run in conjunction with Singapore Polytechnic. The course will involve classroom learning, cyber security project implementation and cyber gaming exercise at the polytechnic's Cyber Wargame Centre.

The other initiative is being run by FireEye, a leading security firm that speacilises in detecting emerging cyber weapons.

KPMG centre to train cyber security execs - The Business Times

15 Jan 2014. KPMG has launched a Cyber Security Centre to help companies train their professionals and upgrade their cyber defence capabilities. Set up with the support of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore and Singapore Polytechnic, the centre is launching its first initiative, a six-month programme for cyber security professionals, this month.

NS: the programme includes cyber gaming exercise at SP's Cyber Wargame Centre.

KPMG in Singapore has launched a six-month cybersecurity training programme, which will include a simulated attack exercise, touted to help businesses better prep their employees amid increasing security attacks.

The six-month capability development programme will focus on three key areas including training participants in the deployment of business frameworks to detect cybersecurity threats as well as in identifying and analyzing malware threats. It will also include simulation exercises which will be held at Singapore Polytechnic's Cyber Wargame Centre, offering participants a platform to test their skills in realistic cybersecurity wargames.

Liew Chin Chuan, course manager for the polytechnic's Diploma in Infocomm Security Management, said in the release: "Going beyond theory into real-life application is important to becoming a better cybersecurity professional. The Cyber Wargame Centre is equipped with a 'Cyber Range' that is able to simulate large-scale cyberattacks and the latest threats in as realistic a manner as possible."

Cyber Wargame Centre @ Singapore Polytechnic

The Cyber Wargame Centre @ Singapore Polytechnic is a suite of facilities for Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) S54 students from the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology. The centre, which is the FIRST of its kind in local tertiary education institutes, trains students to handle real-world cyber security scenarios, with a different learning space for each aspect.

The Cyber Range sees students practicing ethical hacking, the Cyberwatch Competency Centre gives access to defensive technologies, the Malware Analysis Lab allows students to "play" with malicious software safely and the Forensics Investigation Lab teaches both mobile and computer/digital forensics.

Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) @ SP

The Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE) coordinated by the Ministry of Education (MOE) is for Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'O' Level holders.

Registration for courses opens at 3.00pm on the day (13 Jan 2014) of the release of the 'O' Level results and lasts for 5 calendar days. The JAE booklet (application procedures, information on entry requirements, etc.) will be made available to you when you collect your 'O' Level results.

Choosing an Infocomm Security Diploma Course

Diploma Course
Studying for an IT security-related diploma is a significant investment of your time, money and resources. It is better to understand the value that you would be able to generate with the course. A common concern seen among students is the choice between Infocomm Security Management versus  IT security centric (network security or forensics focused) diploma courses. There is no one fit solution for all students. You have to consider various factors before selecting one over the other.

The second year has more security related modules such as Ethical Hacking and Defences, Applied Cryptography, Computer Forensics, Programming using Perl and C, etc. Third year is the most crucial year when you put all the skills and knowledge together to do your final year project plus some modules. You also choose your specialisation: either in Security Incident Management or Forensics and Investigation.

Career Goals
The essays and Interviews would have forced you to think about your career goals in detail. When you are being asked about your career aspiration, you would be expected to think of something related to your long-term and short-term career goals, as well as objectives, based on your career path planning. It is very important for one to plan ahead. If you choose a diploma course that is too specific (such as network security or forensics centric) at the early stage, you have to consider the job prospects and opportunities. In other words, your choice of jobs will be limited.

In Singapore, almost all IT security related jobs require the practitioners to be multi-skilled, that is, the ability to perform multiple IT security related tasks in a single job. So it means that broad-based training gives you the competitive edge you need to secure a job.

Release of GCE 'O' Level Examination Results on 13 January 2014

The results of the 2013 Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE ‘O’ Level) Examination will be released on Monday, 13 January 2014.

School candidates may collect their results from their schools at 2.00 pm on 13 January 2014.

Private candidates will be informed of their results by post. Private candidates may also access their results through the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board website at http://www.seab.gov.sg from 2.00 pm on 13 January 2014.

Head start with SMU-SIS Advanced Placement Programme

SP announces the SMU-SIS Advanced Placement (AP) Programme for students of  Diploma in Business Information Technology (DBIT), Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) and Diploma in Information Technology (DIT). 

The AP programme allows students with good academic results from the Singapore Polytechnic, School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT) in their Year 2 and Year 3 to take up selected two to three university-level courses (equivalent to "modules" in polytechnic) at the Singapore Management University, School of Information Systems (SMU-SIS).

Students can join the AP programme at the end of their first year in polytechnic study. The admission criteria are as follows:
  • A student has attained an aggregate point of not more than 12 in his/her GCE 'O' level, scoring at least A2 grade for both his/her Elementary Mathematics and Additional Mathematics subjects.
  • A student must enrol in DBIT/DISM/DIT diploma and must have attained a GPA of at least 3.7 for the first year of his/her study in polytechnic.
This programme gives students the special opportunity to take one course each in the second and third year of study here in SP. Imagine the chance to be immersed in University classes and interact with undergraduates well before your peers! This will help the student in gaining a better chance to enter SMU for further studies.

Among the 16 scholarships, 6 of the recipients were DISM students. This number is at course level and not school/poly level.

If you are a high-achiever, consider a course with a lower last aggregate score. In year 2012, DISM has a last aggregate score of 13. With a lower last aggregate point, the learning experience will be more stimulating and exciting because you know the the course will offer you the best potential, scope and knowledge. DISM Overseas ITP - New Zealand

From our DISM year-3 students, currently doing Overseas ITP in New Zealand.

"Hello, we are Ritchie, Jun Yuan, Han Yi and Qi Wei from DISM/FT/3B/02. We are currently in an overseas industrial training programme (OITP) at the Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) in New Zealand.

Jun Yuan and Han Yi are working on setting up a software defined network which utilises OpenFlow. Ritchie and Qi Wei is helping on a client honeypot project known as YALIH. During our stay here, we are fortunate enough to have a 2 weeks break over Christmas. We were encouraged to seize the opportunity to tour around New Zealand. Therefore, we ventured down to South Island.

The first day of our trip didn’t went as expected. The weather wasn’t good so the flight had to transit at Invercargill followed by a 3 hour bus ride to Queenstown. Our first destination, Wanaka, is an hour bus ride from Queenstown. When we arrived at Wanaka, we were amazed by the scenery of Lake Wanaka but it was freezing cold even during summer.

After our South Island trip, we went north to Auckland in a 3 hours plane ride from Queenstown. We went on a 1 day guided tour to Waitomo and Rotorua. Waitomo is famous for its glow-worm caves which is unique only to Australia and New Zealand however we are not allowed to take photos during our boat ride in the cave.

Overall, it was an awesome (kiwis love this word) experience touring around stepping on cow dung in farms and breathing in the smell of burning tires. We would like to thank both Singapore Polytechnic and VUW for this opportunity."
