2011 IDA National Infocomm Scholarship (NIS) Awards

29 Jul 2011. Two of our DISM graduands received the 2011 IDA National Infocomm Scholarship (NIS) Awards.

The recipients, Ang Ming Yi and Quek Jie Ping, are co-sponsored by Centre for Strategic Infocomm Technologies (CSIT) to study Computer Science in NUS.

Cyberwellness Talks conducted by Singapore Polytechnic

14 Jul 2011. Cyberwellness Talks conducted by Singapore Polytechnic's School of Digital Media & Infocomm Technology (DMIT) students.

To safeguard students from the dangers of the cyberspace and also to prepare students for the National Infocomm Clubs Awards (NICA), Singapore Polytechnic, School of Digital Media & Infocomm Technology (DMIT) is partnering IDA to conduct Cyberwellness Talks to secondary school students

The objective of the talks is to heighten awareness of the very real dangers of the Internet. Cyberwellness is a pressing issue these days as evident in the numerous reports on internet crimes, social media exploitation, privacy violation, internet addiction, identity theft, cyberbullying, malicious softwares and so on.

Topics
Over the past 12 months, the team from SP gave 15 talks in 10 schools during school assembly, covering topics like cyber-bullying, internet addiction, social engineering and wireless security with 'live' demo. Responses from the schools to the talks given are very positive and encouraging.

Currently the team comprises mostly of Year 3 and Year 2 students from the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management. They are enthusiastic about sharing the skills and knowledge that they learn in their course to make the society more secure.

- Social Engineering Attacks  (20 mins)
· Danger of social media
· Examples of how cybercriminals take advantage of the unsuspecting users
· Show specific examples of common vulnerabilities that users expose themselves to on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare.
· Preventive Measures users can take to safeguard themselves.

Cyber-Bullying (20 mins)
· What is Cyberbullying ?
· What motivates the bullies?
· Effects on the victims
· How to deal with cyberbullying

Internet Addiction (20 mins)
· What is Internet Addiction?
· Who gets addicted to the Internet? Why?
· How do you know if you’re addicted?
· So what if I’m addicted?
· How to save myself from it!

Wireless Security (30 mins)
· Understand Wi-Fi and their threats
· Analyze Wi-Fi misuse cases in SG
· See ‘live’ Wi-Fi hacking demo
· Learn to protecting yourself

IT Masterclass Series Talk

On July 13th afternoon, a group of DISM students attended the Masterclass Series talks. The Infocomm Technology Masterclass Series is a collection of seminars from 13 July to 27 July 2011, during which top industry practitioners and university professors share and present on their areas of expertise.

These seminars are organised for students of Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM), Diploma in Business Information Technology (DBIT) and Diploma in Information Technology (DIT), so that not only can students learn about the latest information relevant to their course of study, but they would also be able to benefit from a broadened vision and perspective.

The two talks conducted were "Computer Vs Human Brain" by Professor Pramod Kumar Meher from School of Computer Engineering in Nanyang Technological University and "Windows Phone 7 Development" by Chris Ismael who is a Developer Evangelist in Microsoft Singapore.

About "Computer Vs Human Brain" seminar:
Although similarities between the computer and the human brain exist, they are different in several respects. This talk discusses the similarities and differences between the computer and the human brain, as well as how one of the two is superior to the other.

Demonstration on Kinect and Windows Phone 7 (Mango).

About "Windows Phone 7 Development" seminar:
To learn about the cool new features of Windows Phone 7 Mango, as well as to see examples on how you can integrate it with the Kinect Sensor. The session is particularly useful for budding mobile developers who have little or no background on WP7 development.

Other seminars to be held in later days include "Pressing the Start Button" (digital entertainment), "Azure Development" and "Mobile Security".
