FIVE (5) Things You Probably Didn't Know About Our Course (DISM)

1. DISM is different from secondary school because …
Unlike a typical classroom lesson, lessons here are pretty much hands on! At DISM, we train you to combat cyber crime by putting you through different scenarios of cyber crime. Each scenario has its own set of challenges and you will have to adopt different strategies to solve them. We also have a league competition where students pit their skills against one another and are awarded points on completion of each scenario. Apart from winning points, students often feel a great sense of achievement once they have conquered a scenario!

2. A lot of your time will be spent in …
The Cyber Wargame Centre! As the name suggests, it is literally a game of war in cyberspace. During lessons, you will be given cyber crime scenarios to tackle. In every scenario, there will always be the good guys (defenders), the bad guys (attackers) and the cops (investigators). You will play any one of these roles and will attempt to penetrate enemy defences, defend yourself against intruders, or be the detective to find out how and why the cyber crime took place.

3. A lot of your time will be spent on …
Wargaming! This is where you start looking for loopholes in computer systems - both your own and others. Once you have discovered these loopholes, you’ll then have to figure out how to “patch” these holes up. In the professional world, companies often organise wargames to test the strength of their security network and to plug any gaps that they might find.

4. The fun thing about DISM is …
You’ll get to play the role of cyber cop! By playing detective, you’ll enter a cyber crime situation to find out how and why the crime could have happened. Once you have found the answers, you will then be able to advise people on how to prevent similar situations from happening.

5. To do well in this profession, you must be able to…
Work in a group and under stress! You will often be working in a team to stop cybercrime, so your ability to communicate with your teammates could determine the success or failure of the mission. Also, cybercrimes must be stopped quickly. It is therefore important that you work quickly and not lose focus!

Opening Address of the Cyber Security Academy by Ms Jacqueline Poh, MD of IDA

A Secure Cyber Environment for A Better Quality of Life.

Opening Address by Ms Jacqueline Poh, Managing Director, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, at the Opening of the Cyber Security Academy,

"This underscores the importance of developing our cyber security human capital, which is a key thrust of the National Cyber Security Masterplan launched in July. Under the Masterplan, we will offer more scholarships to encourage students to specialise in cyber security and work with Singapore's IHLs to offer infocomm security courses and degree programmes. We also welcome initiatives from the educational and private sectors that will help Singapore increase its pool of cyber security professionals and upgrade their competencies to meet fast evolving challenges.

I am pleased, therefore to see this Cyber Security Academy take us a step forward toward this objective. First, it will cater to those new to the field, such as students and individuals seeking a mid-career change. Second, it will help upgrade the skills of existing cyber security professionals and third, it will hone the skills of companies' cyber security staff through cyber security exercises.

The Cyber Security Academy will be an important contributor towards nurturing more highly-skilled cyber security experts for Singapore and we hope it will inspire other initiatives in this field. But even as we strive to train more cyber security experts, this education must be accompanied by appropriate ethics instructions to ensure that they do not use their new-found skills for nefarious purposes. While many characteristics of the Internet can tempt you into thinking that it is a different sort of realm where different rules apply, Internet is far from being isolated from the physical world. In Singapore as in many countries, the authorities view computer misuse and cybercrime very seriously and hold perpetrators liable for real-world penalties."

Launch of Singapore's First Cyber Security Academy

18 Dec 2013. Singapore Polytechnic launches Singapore’s first Cyber Security Academy amongst Institutes of Higher Learning to provide cyber-defence assessment services and training.

Singapore Polytechnic (SP) today launched the first and only Cyber Security Academy amongst Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) in Singapore. The Academy will allow corporate and government organisations to test the resiliency of their IT systems against cyber-attacks with a comprehensive suite of cyber-defence assessment services. It will also provide Continuing Education and Training (CET) courses to working professionals, allowing them to keep ahead of technology or to seek a new career in infocomm security.

At the same time, the Academy will help to address the shortage of IT security professionals faced by the industry. According to the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore, there were only 1,200 IT security specialists in 2012 and this represents 0.8 per cent of the 144,300 infocomm workers in Singapore.

The establishment of the Academy is also in line with the National Cyber Security Masterplan 2018 by the Infocomm Development Authority. Through the many programmes, the Masterplan aims to address the threat posed by the rising number of sophisticated cyber-attacks, exacerbated by the shortage of cyber-security experts needed to mitigate them. This is done through the development of human and intellectual capital and working with IHLs by incorporating cyber-security into curriculum programmes.

Housed in SP’s existing Cyber Wargame Centre, the Academy was conceived with a Memorandum of Cooperation signed in September 2013 between SP and Ixia. This marks SP as the first IHL in South East Asia to be equipped with Ixia’s flagship BreakingPoint security test solutions. This will allow the simulation of realistic large-scale cyber-attacks of up to 7.5 million users to assess the resiliency of IT systems against such attacks. One such common cyber-attack is the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), which aims to overload a website by injecting malicious high-volume traffic.

Mr Naveen Bhat, VP and GM of Ixia Asia-Pacific said, “We are very pleased to be a part of this collaborative effort with SP to help raise Singapore’s capability to withstand the increasing threat from cyber-attacks. Ixia believes that the launch of this new facility will offer students and IT security professionals the most realistic environment to train and prepare for the increasing number of cyber-attacks we are seeing in Singapore and ASEAN

The five-day basic CET course conducted by the Academy will see participants undergoing hands-on training in theoretical and practical cyber-security concepts as part of Ixia’s unique ‘Cyber Range Essentials’ curriculum.

The basic CET course will equip IT professionals and adult learners with the knowledge and skills in effectively conducting offensive and defensive cyber-security operations, empowering them to play an integral role in their organisation’s cyber-security efforts.

Professionals and organisations can continue with an advanced CET course to gain a deeper understanding of using a safe virtual environment for cyber-warfare training and cyber-technology development.

Mr Liew Chin Chuan, Course Manager for Diploma in Infocomm Security Management said, “With this new set-up, course participants will now have the first-hand appreciation of large-scale cyber-attacks and the latest threats. Our staff will also be empowered to impart such critical knowledge to their students, which will enhance their knowledge and thus empowering them to deal with real-world cyber-security threats”.

Moving forward, other industry partners such as e-COP and ST Electronics will also make use of the Academy to conduct other relevant courses, catering to the demands of the growing cyber-security industry.
