NISEC 2014 Zero Day Defence Competition

3 Jul 2014. The National Infocomm Security Competition 2014 - Zero Day Defence Competition has successfully ended. Conducted from 18 to 20 June 2014, twenty-three teams from Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University had participated in this competition.

The participating teams went through a three-day boot camp, with round-the-clock training, web application development and penetration challenge.

Team Burden (National University of Singapore),
Members - Yeo Quan Yang*, Ang Ming Yi*, Low Yong Jin Jaryl
NS: * denotes DISM Alumni
The final round of the competition was the Penetration Challenge, which tests the teams’ skills in performing reconnaissance and penetration within a short duration of 3 hours. Many teams came prepared with their suite of vulnerability scanning tools, which were instantly executed once the clock starts ticking. Code injection to the form fields which did not perform validation checks was also a common tactic used by several teams to compromise the web applications. The teams have to compromise opponent teams’ web applications and even their backend server for points to be awarded.  Source: www.gosafeonline.sg

Team Burden from NUS eventually emerged as the winning team for the NISEC 2014 Zero Day Defence Competition.

Quan Yang and Ming Yi are DISM alumni and we are happy for their achievement in the competition. We hope this will inspire our DISM students to continue to strife for betterment in their studies as well as IT security competitions.
