Database Security & Management Competition

For the first time an Database Security & Management (DSM) assignment has taken the form of an exciting mini-tournament!

A class is split into groups of 4 to 5 students, and each team was given an unprotected database/web server image which they have to beef it up by hardening the operating system and database configurations.

After the initial setup teams will then commence on attacking on others' live server through exploitation methods and techniques such as Structured Query Language Injection. Points are awarded based on how much data a team manages to read or write into other databases, and additional bonus is awarded to anyone who can gain full control of another's server.

In the end there will also be a presentation session for participating teams to share with each other their attempts, approaches, achievements, learnings and reflections during the competition.

Mozilla Capture The Flag Challenge 2012

In the recently concluded 2012 Mozilla Capture The Flag (CTF) international open challenge (http://mozillactf.org), our very own team "Narwhals" managed to clinch 34th position out of 200 plus registered teams.

Why is there a Mozilla CTF?

Our aims are currently twofold: First, we want to show less experienced people that CTFs are fun and security is not a secret conspiracy thing you will never understand. Second, we would like to engage experienced security folks into Mozilla and raise awareness for our bug bounty program. [MozillaWiki]

Our team was also the first one to solve challenge number 9 "Spark - Hail Atlantean!" earning 250 basic points. It is reflected in the scoreboard below with golden color text as well as 3 additional reward points.

Samson Yeow, a lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic's (SP) School of Digital Media & Infocomm Technology, agreed, saying that it is reasonably easy to set up a Wi-Fi network within one's premises and the costs are "negligible". Learning about infocomm-security through cyber wargames

12 Dec 2011. If you're a geek at heart then you should definitely check out the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management's (DISM) Cyber Wargame Centre (CWC).

An amalgamation of cyber gaming and infocomm security concepts, the centre aims to equip students with the right set of skills to deal with real-world security scenarios such as intrusion detection.

Pit yourself against your coursemates as you alternate between the opposing and defending factions to uncover software loopholes using a simulation-based learning approach.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg. The facility also boasts of four state-of-the-art laboratories:

1) Cyberwatch Competency Centre - Together with partner e-Cop, this centre is the first-of-its-kind in the region, and a critical component in the cyber wargame pedagogy. Leveraging on e-Cop's solutions deployed on Microsoft platforms, the Cyberwatch Competency Centre will be established on Singapore Polytechnic's campus, giving students direct access to the latest defensive technologies at their fingertips.

30 Nov 2011. e-Cop is collaborating with SP to set up the Cyberwatch Competency Centre, which provides the polytechnic's students with hands-on cyber-security training. SP’s Diploma in Infocomm Security Management course accepts 60 students a year. They get to use Cyclops, e-Cop's proprietary tool for managing security incidents.

The security surveillance software guards against potential cyber threats. SP Principal Tan Hang Cheong said students, while interning at e-Cop, will work in real-world scenarios so they will be ready to contribute when they graduate

On 24th Nov, a group of secondary 1 students from various schools including Chinese High and CHIJ attended an introductory course on Computer Forensics conducted by DISM lecturer with the assistance of two DISM year 2 students.

After the lunch visiting students were also invited on a tour around the campus as well as to attend the ITSA seminar themed around "Privacy and Security of Mobile Devices / Applications".

ITSA, or known as Infocomm Security Awareness day has been held on 23rd November 2011. This event was organized by DMIT School and Diploma in Security Management course mates.

In the year of 2011, most of the students own at least a laptop and mobile device, but how many of them who truly understand how secure their privacy? Speaking of that, this main purpose of this event is to educate students to be aware of privacy issues in the internet and mobile device.

On that day itself, 4 booths have been set up near Foodcourt 6 and in front of MLT 12. Different issues and topics are exhibited on each booth. This includes Instant Messaging Sniffing, Mobile Device Security, Online privacy and at last but not least, usage of proxy. Meanwhile with live demonstration of instant messaging sniffing and mobile spying being done on the spot, students are being attracted to have a look. Mini prizes are also given out to students who answered correctly few questions that set by us in each booth.

The event came to its climax when students are being invited to attend the Information Seminar which covers the topics of Mobile Security. The seminar started off with an opening address from Mr. Liew, lecturer of SP DMIT which introduces the speakers from the industries. The first speaker, Mr. Leonard Ong, director of ISACA Academic Outreach, mentioned of being more security conscious with mobile devices. The next speaker which is Mr. Rajkumar Rajagobalan, General Manager of Lilly Co-Innovation Lab, HCL Singapore. He covers the topic of Security Pitfalls of Mobile Applications. Our last speaker is Mr. Hiten Shah, he emphasis on Security issues that caused by Mobile Devices. Mini prizes are given out to participants during Quiz Session. Furthermore, a lucky draw event took place and prizes were given out to lucky participants at the end of the event.

Overall, this event was responded well by the students and the purpose of this event was accomplished.

Singapore's first CyberWatch Competency Centre unveiled

9 Nov 2011. Singapore Polytechnic and security vendor, e-Cop, has collaborated to establish a Cyberwatch Competency Centre which leverages e-Cop solutions built on Microsoft platforms.

Announced today at the second annual Cyber Security Asia conference, e-Cop said the center will provide students and educators from the polytechnic with the opportunity to work with the security vendor on real-world cybersecurity projects, giving them market-relevant experience to groom the next generation of IT security thought leaders.

Under the collaboration, the tertiary institution will set up a center set to be open in April 2012. Running e-Cop's products on Microsoft platforms, the facility will be part of a new "learning space concept" for students pursuing a Diploma in Infomm Security Management, Tan Hang Cheong, principal of Singapore Polytechnic (SP), said in a statement.

"Just as soldiers are trained in firing ranges before going onto the battlefield, this new learning space will provide SP's students with an authentic learning environment to train them in dealing with real-world security scenarios," Tan added.

Walter Lee, CEO of e-Cop Group, added that cybersecurity is of paramount importance to governments and corporations. This partnership, supported by Microsoft, will further build the cybersecurity capability and capacity in Singapore, increasing resilience into the future, he said.

Cybercrime is also no longer just an activity engaged in by small groups of individuals, said Michael Wilks, Microsoft's regional director of public safety and national security. It has, in fact, become the province of large, well-organized criminal enterprises seeking to perpetrate "high-value fraud and theft" globally, he noted.

Governments such as Britain and India have called for a "coordinated global response" to tackle the increase in cybersecurity threats and partnerships between the private sector and educational institution, such as today's announcement, he added. This will not only benefit teachers and students but will also, eventually, benefit the nation's entire cybersecurity ecosystem, he noted.

"By providing students with the latest security tools and expertise, we are confident that this is a sustainable program that will continuously groom Singapore's cybersecurity thought leaders," Wilks said.

“Security is the most important concern in today’s Internet world. We are proud to partner e-Cop in training the next generation of Cyber defenders. This collaboration also allows SP to have the opportunity to work with e-Cop on Infocomm Security Research and Development projects. SP’s staff and students will greatly benefit from this opportunity to learn from an industry leader like e-Cop,” added Mr Lim Peng Hun, Singapore Polytechnic’s Deputy Principal.

In case you have not heard, our new Infocomm Security laboratories are under renovation in order to create a more conducive and well-equipped learning environment for future students. For the brief time being we will be using the transitional labs... But nothing is going to stop us DISMers from having fun!

On 2nd Nov, a Lab Warming Party was organized by year 2 students and sanctioned by the management team - the only time to eat yummy Pizza and have tasty drinks while playing games in school labs!

It was a fitting end to the semestral break this October when 10 students from the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) spent their last week of their holidays in Kuala Lumpur pitting their hacking skills against security professionals and enthusiasts from all around the globe, where teams came from places as far off as the Netherlands. The Hack-in-the-Box KUL Conference (at the Hotel Intercontinental) was host to the Tower of Hackf00 Madness Attack-Only Capture the Flag Hacking Competition where participants had to retrieve 'flags' by successfully completing a number of challenges from various problem domains such as Cryptography or Reverse Engineering.

The students formed two teams of three each: π and Lepak for the competition that was held over two days, spanning a total of 31 hours and ran without interruption except for a two-hour maintainance pit-stop. It was a gruelling experience indeed for everyone involved; sleep was a short and valued commodity.

On the first day of the trip, the students established their residences and checked out the competition area, with intent to familiarise themselves in preparation for the event the very next day. They turned in early, getting that much needed rest for what was to come.

Early next morning, the team made their way to the competition venue, armed with the necessary hardware. Before the competion started, the organisers gave a briefing on the rules for the CtF and from there, it began. Both teams leapt onto the scoreboard bearing points within the first 8 hours, solving the easy bin challenge. As the skies darkened, the competition arena started to empty. Most of the competing teams chose to rest. Eventually, only the Japanese team (Sutegoma2), the Vietnamese team (D3c3p71c0n), and both DISM teams remained. They spent the whole night and morning working furiously throughout.

On the second day of the challenge, π managed to clinch one more challenge (1337 racer) just in time to see itself gain 8th placing on the scoreboard when the time ran out. Lepak stood at 10th.

While the π and Lepak agreed that they might not gotten as great as a placing they would like, it was definitely an eye-opening experience for the 7 year twos and the 3 year threes. Many lessons were learnt during the trip, and it is certain, it has changed them.

Over the past few weeks, a group of DISM students have undergone a series of intensive training courses in preparation for the upcoming Capture The Flag hacking competition which is a part of the Hack In The Box security conference 2011 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

On 7th Oct, the teams once again gathered together for the final briefing and meeting session. DISM lecturers stressed the utmost importance of staying safe during the trip as well as several other important points to note.

The competition was very intense throughout the whole game and at one point it was as if each team's score took turn to climb. The contest over the first three positions was especially fierce towards the end of the game as the ranking just took one unexpected turn after another while the highest score was constantly being refreshed.

In the end, one of our SP DISM team "BPC" managed to get into the top three positions. By and large it was a helpful, memorable and eye-opening experience for every student participant from DISM.

At the end of the day DISM course manager Mr Liew Chin Chuan commented on the game: "It was a good effort from all of you! I hope everyone had fun and enjoyed the competition. We will learn from this experience and emerge as stronger teams in the next event!"

DISM SIG Training Workshop

Over the past few weeks during holiday, some year 3 seniors have conducted training workshops as part of the DISM SIG (Special Interest Group) activities, to better prepare the junior members in the course for the upcoming competitions such as the Singapore Cyber Conquest and Hack In The Box in Malaysia.

Topics and skills covered in the series of workshops comprise of pentest foundamentals, site footprinting, general web application security, sql injection, directory traverse, cross site scripting, cookie tampering as well as usage of tools like nmap, metasploit and sqlninja.

To safeguard students from the dangers of the cyberspace and also to prepare students for the National Infocomm Clubs Awards (NICA), Singapore Polytechnic, School of Digital Media & Infocomm Technology (DMIT) is partnering IDA to conduct Cyberwellness Talks to secondary school students

The objective of the talks is to heighten awareness of the very real dangers of the Internet. Cyberwellness is a pressing issue these days as evident in the numerous reports on internet crimes, social media exploitation, privacy violation, internet addiction, identity theft, cyberbullying, malicious softwares and so on.

Over the past 12 months, the team from SP gave 15 talks in 10 schools during school assembly, covering topics like cyber-bullying, internet addiction, social engineering and wireless security with 'live' demo. Responses from the schools to the talks given are very positive and encouraging.

Currently the team comprises mostly of Year 3 and Year 2 students from the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management. They are enthusiastic about sharing the skills and knowledge that they learn in their course to make the society more secure.

On July 13th afternoon, a group of DISM students attended the Masterclass Series talks. The Infocomm Technology Masterclass Series is a collection of seminars from 13 July to 27 July 2011, during which top industry practitioners and university professors share and present on their areas of expertise.

These seminars are organised for students of Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM), Diploma in Business Information Technology (DBIT) and Diploma in Information Technology (DIT), so that not only can students learn about the latest information relevant to their course of study, but they would also be able to benefit from a broadened vision and perspective.

CyberWellness Team Bonding Day

The SP DMIT CyberWellness Team comprises of students mostly from Diploma in Infocomm Security Management and other courses such as Diploma in Information Technology and Diploma in Business Information Technology.

The team aims to promote using Internet in a safe manner and raise cyber wellness awareness among students. Over the years our students have conducted talks in various secondary schools during occasions like school assembly and they have received much positive feedback. Some of the topics covered are: Social Engineering, Cyber Bullying, Internet Addiction and Copyright Protection.

On the 21st of June, senior students from year 3 as well as new team members in year 1 and 2 came together for the bonding day. During the session, junior members each delivered a short presentation on a cyber safety related topic, and then experienced presenters commented on them and also shared many tips in giving a good presentation. Later on, they played a game designed to practice one's communication skill through verbal and body language.

We hope in the time to come, the new members can smoothly take over from the seniors and bring the Singapore Polytechnic CyberWellness team to a whole new level!

25 May 2011. DISM students gathered together for mass briefing on Wednesday, 25 May 2011 at MLT 11. This was the first time where all the DISM students from 3 cohorts came together housed under one roof. Mr Liew Chin Chuan, Chair of Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) was the host for the event.

During the session, DMIT Dy Director, Mrs Boo presented the certificates to the DISM top students on Director's Honour Roll.

Mr Liew also took the opportunity to briefed the students on the different possibilities in DISM course such as community services, professional certification programmes and advancement opportunities to univeristies. Our alumnus, Mr Tan Jing Wei shared about his learning journey in SP and his stories were really inspiring to the existing students.

Mr Julian Ho, Director of ThinkSECURE was present to give away the Organizational Systems Security Analyst (OSSA) certificates to those who took and passed the examination during the vacation in March 2011.

We really hope that there would be more such gathering sessions in the not too distant future. This would allow new and refreshing bonding experience between the different cohorts of students, the lecturers, alumni and the industry partners.

19 May 2011. As Singaporeans get more tech-savvy, so are the online threats that await us! So, how do we protect ourselves from these threats? Well, that’s where a special group of SP students come in!

Ng Zi Kai and Yap Yao Ming, students from SP’s School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT), have been conducting cyber-wellness talks in secondary schools around Singapore to educate the increasingly tech-savvy generation of teenagers like you and me!

After receiving the chosen topics from the secondary schools, Zi Kai, Yao Ming and their fellow student presenters wasted no time in preparing for the presentation. Being informative and yet engaging at the same time is key to making the cyber-wellness talk a success as they seek to strike a balance between the two.

The Metagame

Many of us rely on IT and computers for work and fun. They’re an integral part of our lives. However, although technology has helped us in many ways, there are many dangers too. That's why it is important to understand the dangers and learn how to protect ourselves against them.

Yao Ming said, “It is not just protecting yourself from evil doers. It is also to protect yourself from doing evil (without you knowing it)! An example would be the the act of mooching, whereby you use your neighbour's Internet network without their permission and knowledge. Do you know that it is illegal and you can be charged in court?”

Tools Of The Trade

Yao Ming and Zi Kai are students from SP’s Diploma in Infocomm Security Management where they learn the necessary skills to face and resolve online threats.

Zi Kai revealed, “We are taught how hackers think and act. With this knowledge, we can educate people to defend themselves against these threats.”

In addition, they learned presentation skills as well as technical knowledge such as computer law and ethical hacking skills (to know the main cause of the attack).

What’s The Situation?

While many Singaporeans are indeed getting more tech-savvy and well-informed about the Internet, Yao Ming feels that there are still many out there who make use of it without caution. Haphazard use of the Internet sometimes comes with a heavy price. Think online lottery scams and key-logging incidents that have caused vital personal information such as personal addresses and credit card numbers to be leaked.

Yao Ming affirmed, “I think people generally should have at least some basic knowledge on how to protect themselves. As for the tougher parts, that’s what we are here for.”

Educating the future generation, one school at a time.

As companies and corporations all over the world begin to heavily integrate IT into their businesses, the demand for IT security experts inevitably increases.

Future careers from this course virtually (no pun intended!) stretches across every single field of work. These include IT security solution providers, auditing and consultancy firms, banking and financial institutions, and organisations that require IT security services in the public and private sectors.

18 Mar 2011. Twenty secondary school students from Hillgrove Secondary School attended a five-day course at the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT). The course entitled as "Fundamentals of Infocomm Security", gave students an overview of infocomm security and how one can protect and strengthen a system with various applications. Students were coached to identify system vulnerabilities and threats such as malware and trojan horses and how to prevent viruses from spreading.

Wireless Security Workshop on 5th March

A wireless security workshop was held on 5th of March with participants coming from year 1's and even graduates from SP! This workshop has taught them that default settings router are not safe and people could possibly hack into their facebook and twitter accounts just by listening to the decrypted messages in the air!

New IT Security Portal

21 Feb 2011. A group of IT security enthusiasts (largely from SP-DISM) have embarked on creating a central portal for IT security personnel in Singapore to get together and discuss / network / post about IT security.

The main purpose of the portal is to raise IT security awareness and to encourage IT security professionals to join and contribute to the community. It is also a platform for tertiary students to learn and communicate with the professionals. Students can benefit by sharing and acquiring knowledge from the portal, sharing their progress and make queries of their Final Year Project (FYP) and hear from the professionals on the portal as well.

The students were seen enjoying their time together as they bond and learn new knowledge together! At the end of the session, a practical spot quiz was conducted to ensure that the year 1 students really learned what was taught!

12 Jan 2011. More DISM students passed their Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) / EC-Council Certified Security Analyst (ECSA) professional certification exams this afternoon. The exam was conducted in DMIT Infocomm Security Labs. Total of 4 DISM graduands and 3 DISM students took and passed the CEH/ECSA exams.

Final Year Project Sharing: Image Forensics Toolkit

Synopsis: The purpose of the project is to explore the use of recaptured data and to develop counter-measures to deal with facial recognition attacks with photos

Aim: It aims to create data that can help in detecting image of images and an infrastructure to research and facilitate on capturing recaptured images. The data which we use consists of images of scenery and facial images and they are recaptured using many kinds of devices. Some of them would be the Acer M-900 phone, HP iPAQ hw 6960, Nokia N95 and the iPhone 3GS. As for the infrastructure, it will be a website which hosts data samples of recaptured images that we have collected for users to use as research data.

In this project, the group found out that illumination and camera angles are very crucial factors in good data samples. The quality and clarity of the recapturing device is also very important in recapturing images. As for the website, the group decided to let people download the dataset so that researchers may use it if they are keen on this direction of research too because image recapture datasets are not widely available on the internet now.

Commenting on his learning experience, student Yeo Quan Yang said, "Through this project, I learn that we should be clear of what we are doing and also the scope of the project so that we would understand what we are doing and avoid doing things that are out of the scope. Teamwork is also very important, as we need everyone to complete their task on time so that we can move on to the next task."

"Taking recaptured image is not an easy task as well. I have to consider the wind and brightness of the photo. Location is an important factor. It has to be neither too bright nor too dark. At the start, my hand would be shaking a lot when taking the photos. Now, I can take very quickly and without much error." said Tan Bong Siong.

Another student, Kang Xian Yang said, "If I have not taken this project, Image Forensics Toolkit, as my final year project, I will most likely have not thought of using pictures to bypass facial recognition authentication systems. I feel this is an ingenious way of hacking. This shows that hacking is not just limited to the programming level. And there are other ways of hacking."

Perfect Score for Security+ Exam

10 Jan 2010. Great achievements by the DISM students. 17 DISM students (3 from Year1, 11 from Year2, 3 from Year3) obtained the CompTIA Security+ Certification in December 2010.

Of which two of the students scored a perfect score of 900/900. They are:

Finanl Year Project Sharing: Mac OS X Forensics

Synopsis: The purpose of this project is to perform computer forensics to retrieve deleted data in the Mac OS X‟s default file system. The study of the file system and data structure will also be carried out.

Aim: It aims to carry out computer forensics on an operating system that is seldom used by many. Cache files will be retrieved. The web pages that have been visited in the past can also be retrieved. Emails can also be retrieved.

Final Year Project: The FYP intends to provide students an opportunity to integrate knowledge and technical skills they have acquired from the course and experience problem solving, communication and working as a team to work on an Infosec Security Project. In the project, the students are expected to perform problem analysis, investigation, solution design and implementation of security related project

The students in this project spent one semester to complete the project. This involved the study of the operating system, evaulation of computer/digital forensics tools and wrting the report. It was important to note the project was co-supervised by SP lecturer and DSO researcher. The students had learnt the technical know-how from both the supervisors in the area of computer/digital forensics, and really benefited from the project.

"Through this Final Year Project on Mac OS X Forensics, I have a better understanding of the Macintosh File System which is the Hierarchical File System Plus. I had the chance to test out forensic tools such as The Sleuth Kit, Autopsy Forensic Browser, Safari Forensic Tool, File Juicer and HFS Debug. All these tools are essential in the process of performing computer forensics on the Mac. I also realized that data residue still exist after being deleted from the system. The concepts behind computer forensics never change, hence, the skills and knowledge acquired during the process will serve as a foundation for our computer forensics module." said Kok Keong.

Another student, Adam said, "Having done Mac OS X Forensic as my Final Year Project, I have become more familiar with Macintosh Operating System as well as the importance of forensic tools used in the event of a forensic investigation. Don’t ever think that data wiped from your trash will be destroyed permanently, they’re not!"

DISM Guest Lecture/Seminar

3 Dec 2010. DMIT hosted a guest lecture/seminar at LT17B for all our DISM students. Our guest speaker, Mr Julian Ho, Director/Co-founder of ThinkSECURE, presented a very interesting topic on wireless security. Coupled with a live demonstration on how a hacker can possibly gain access to certain profile information for penetrating into a wireless network, it was important to spread the message of safe computing to all the users with wireless network access.

The session was very informative with many interesting penetration testing tools for wireless network being shown to the DISM students. This surely had stirred the keen interests of the students who wanted to learn more about wireless network security. All the students enjoyed the session and hoped to have more of such type of action-filled seminars in the future.

Mr Ho also took the opportunity to announce the inclusion of the Organizational Systems Wireless Auditor® (OSWA™) course with the academic partnership between SP and ThinkSECURE. Our students would have the opportunity to sign up for this professional certification course, the one and only polytechnic in Singapore to have such offer.

NIS Scholar 2010 - Andre Ng Hao Yuan

Another DISM graduand (2007-2010), Andre Ng Hao Yuan's dream of making an impact on the local infocomm industry received a boost when he clinched the National Infocomm Scholarship (NIS).

Awarded by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the NIS provides recipients with opportunities to further their studies and work with leading infocomm companies.

For Andre, he will be undergoing the SMU-CMU Fast Track Masters Programme, which will allow him to complete his degree and masters in about four years.

The Diploma in Infocomm Security Management graduate said, "I want to play a part in creating a safer computing frontier in Singapore and be involved in any plans that IDA have in future."

DISM Graduand 2010 Awarded Gold Medal - Justin Ross Clarke

The Power of a Mother's Love

Justin Ross Clarke is not quite your typical Singaporean youth. He had the privilege of attending schools in New Zealand, United Kingdom and the Australian International School in Singapore for most of his school life. Despite the privileges, he lacked one major component to an otherwise perfect life – a father-figure to look up to.

Growing up, Justin’s father was away most of the time due to the nature of his work. His parents went their separate ways when he was a young boy. His mother made many sacrifices just to give him a normal and well-adjusted childhood.

Justin, though, did not once complain about the lack of a normal family nucleus. In fact, he used it to his advantage to do well in his studies so that he could repay his mom’s sacrifices and kindness.
But he was almost derailed along the road of excellence. The usually top student became complacent and slacked off during his first year in secondary school at Fulford School (United Kingdom). He fared quite badly and it reflected clearly on his mother’s face. Although his mother did not reprimand him, this was enough to turn him around.

The Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) graduate, who scored a perfect GPA of 4.0, counts hard work, diligence, willingness to persevere and his mother’s love and guidance as the ingredients for his success. His overseas education also helped to broaden his horizon and shape his out-of-the-box thinking. Justin has been awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Award.

With this mindset and the desire to try new food as a result of being away from Singapore for a number of years, Justin and a friend set up the Food Connoisseur Club (FCC) in Singapore Polytechnic. He admits to being embarrassed about his limited knowledge of local cuisine and has made it his club’s mission to expose people like him to local food. Despite the initial stumbling blocks, the FCC is now a popular student club with more than 200 members and counting, all thanks to Justin’s determination in establishing the club.

Justin has accepted the offer to read Arts & Social Sciences at the National University of Singapore as he wishes to pursue his passion in humanities. He hopes to land a career in the Armed Forces or the Police Force after university so that he can contribute meaningfully to society and provide a better life for his mother.

DISM Graduand 2009 Awarded Gold Medal - Teh Qin Chuan

Our DISM graduand (2006 - 2009), Teh Qin Chuan, was awarded Gold Medal for his excellent academic achievement. Qin Chuan also has been awarded the National Infocomm Scholarship (NIS), a scholarship that recognises exceptional students and nurtures them as top talents for Singapore's infocomm industry.

During his 3-year course at SP, Qin Chuan won a bond-free scholarship worth more than $6,000 offered by Symantec in 2007, a software specialist in security and information management. The money would cover his entire three-year education, including reimbursement of fees already paid for his first and second years' studies.

"My interests are in the areas of penetration testing methodology and malware analysis techniques. I hope to be part of the frontier in the Singapore Security Industry, providing protective security to Government ministries/departments, statutory boards and sensitive key installations through the identification, assessment and review of security measures." said Qin Chuan.

He will be reading a Bachelor Degree of Computing in Computer Science with specialisation in Information Security at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

NIS Scholar 2009 - Tan Jingwei

Our DISM graduand (2006-2009), Tan Jingwei is en route to becoming the next infocomm leaders of Singapore. He has been awarded the National Infocomm Scholarship (NIS), a scholarship that recognises exceptional students and nurtures them as top talents for Singapore's infocomm industry.

He will receive tuition grants, exam fees, hostel funding and an annual allowance from this scholarship. He will also have the opportunity to go on a six-month overseas work attachment and understudy some leading professionals in the industry.

Jingwei cannot wait for 2011 to start his Bachelor in Computer Science degree with a major in security management at the Royal Holloway, University of London.

"The Royal Holloway is a prestigious school. It is well-known for its security management programmes so I'm really excited at the prospect of studying there," said Jingwei.

Jingwei (the third from left in photo) developed an interest in IT security when he was studying his Diploma in Infocomm Security Management at SP. He graduated with merit in the top 10 per cent of his cohort this year.

He said: "My training in SP has helped lay a good foundation and gave me exposure to hone my skills in security management. I'm very grateful to my lecturers who gave me lessons beyond the classroom context such as life skills, critical thinking and career guidance. All these helped to bring me a step closer to my dream job".

Jingwei wants to be a policy maker for infocomm security or a security management specialist in a multi-national corporation after he graduates.

USA Overseas Industrial Training Program

Several of our DISM students joined the overseas industrial training programme organised by the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT) to Silicon Valley, San Francisco, USA from 19th to 27th September 2010.

The programme involed study trips to San JosState University, Stanford university, The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)and University of Southern California (USC) as well as workshops organised by eBay, Facebook, IDEO, Intel and Loyalty Play Holdings.

The USA OITP trip was an enriching study trip where students were occupied with lectures, company visits and university tours. But besides the knowledge gained, it was fun-filled with good food, good culture, good scenery, good people and of course the great company!

“Sure I didn’t get to see Hollywood, other states and meet Justin Bieber but what I learned was way more valuable than that. I learned about the people, their culture. I learned their way of open learning in groups and discussion and that if you have a idea don’t just throw it away. Develop it, polish it and publish it. More importantly, I learned something entirely new which is design thinking. Its something I am considering doing in the near future. It was only 7 days I spend in the US but it was enough to turn me into a believer.”, said Pravin, a year 2 DISM student.

Digital Media & IT Fiesta! 2010

Digital Media & IT Fiesta! 2010 event was held in School of DMIT during the month of October. Secondary school students from various schools gather for exciting and fun-filled 1 to 4 days workshops conducted by our enthusiastic instructors: Our very own Year 2 and 3 students from DMIT.

In this event, DISM conducted the workshop entitled “Know Your Enemies: The Infocomm Security Challenge”.

The main objective of the workshop was to educate and invoke interest in secondary school students regarding the areas of IT Security.

The participants were working in a group of 4, and undergone 2 sessions of training: one training session on Steganography conducted by our DISM year-2 student, Jia Ming and the other session on wireless exploits by another DISM year-2 student, Max Chee. They were assisted by all other DISM year-2 students.

At the end of the sessions, a mini competition was held in the Infocomm Security Labs. The competition was played out with a storyline where the participants were investigators and they were supposed to investigate a data-theft case. The participants needed to apply what they had learnt during the sessions and solved the case in which they needed to identify the "Real" hacker. It was really an exciting and fun-filled event and all the participants enjoyed the training sessions as well as the mini competition.

AIRRIAD 3 and ITSA Day 2010

IT Security Awareness Day has been a regular event organised by the Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) since 2006. Organised by the students to promote infocomm security awareness among the staff and students of SP, it has taken various formats over the years. This year we had AirRaid3, an infocomm security tournament jointly organised by ThinkSECURE and Singapore Polytechnic.

On 20 Oct 2010, thirteen local and international teams descended on the Hangout@T21 with one aim : winning the eight-hour AirRaid3 marathon challenge. Armed with software and laptops, teams test their skills against the wired and wireless game infrastructure for the top prize of US$4000 plus valuable network equipment.

Learning about wireless security In conjunction with AirRaid3, the DISM students set up the IT Security Awareness 2010 roadshow. This year's format showcases booths emphasising the importance of strong passwords, firewalls, wireless security and the tricks of social engineering. After visiting the booths, visitors were given the opportunity to test their knowledge on infocomm security.

By the end of the day, students were elated. Nicholas Toh, a Year 2 DISM student who was one of the student organisers, said, "The IT Security Awareness Day cum AirRaid3 event was a blast! IT Security Awareness Day gave us a chance to educate the public what DISM students have learned; AirRaid3 gave us an idea of how a hacking competition is like. This knowledge would allow us to be better prepared for future competitions and bring glory to SP when we win them! Besides the event itself, it was also an opportunity for the seniors and juniors to come together and know each other better. I am glad that I was involved in this meaningful event."

“We were given a chance to apply our knowledge in a real life scenario. All in all, it was a fun and great learning experience,” said Mohamad Daniel Bte Hamid, a final-year DISM student, who participated in AirRaid3.

HITB SIGINT 2010

14 Ocrt 2010. The HITB SIGINT (Signal Intelligence/Interrupt) sessions were designed to provide a quick 15 minute overview for material and research that was up and coming.

2 of our DISM students, M Rubern and Mohamad Daniel presented their topic in one of the SIGINT sessions at the HITB Security Conference 2010 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The topic presented was entitled "Automatic Malware Classification and hBot". This project consisted of two sub-projects. The first project, project A, was a variant Instant-Messenging (IM) honeynet which was capable of capturing URL and files between conversations. The second project, project B, was a scripted process to make use of current available tools to perform malware analysis as quickly as possible. By nature, project A would be collecting “samples” for project B to process.

Hack-In-The-Box Security Conference 2010 @ KL, Malaysia

A group of eleven DISM students travelled to the Hack-In-The-Box Security Conference 2010 held at Crowne Plaza Mutiara Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The stduents were accompanied by one DMIT lecturer.

The students comprised of DISM students from Years 1, 2 and 3. It was a great exposure trip as students actually took part in the Capture-The-Flag competition as well as the conference.

Prior to the trip, the DISM students defined their learning objectives and outcomes for the trip. They hope to learn more from the conference presenters, as well as to network with IT security practitioners in this event.

They trully enjoyed the trip and all felt the trip was a worthwhile event to attend.
